What Do the Model Number and Serial Number Mean?

The model number and serial number of your Yamaha clarinet can tell you some information about your instrument, such as its type, level, material, key system, bore size, design, and production year. Here are some general rules for interpreting them:

  • The first three letters of the model number indicate the type of clarinet. YCL stands for Yamaha Clarinet, YAL stands for Yamaha Alto Clarinet, and YBL stands for Yamaha Bass Clarinet.

  • The first digit of the model number indicates the level of clarinet. 2 stands for student models, 4 stands for intermediate models, 5 stands for professional models, 6 stands for custom models, and 8 stands for handmade models.

  • The second digit of the model number indicates the material of clarinet. 0 stands for plastic or resin, 1 stands for grenadilla wood, 2 stands for rosewood, 3 stands for ebonite or hard rubber, and 4 stands for cocobolo wood.

  • The third digit of the model number indicates the key system of clarinet. 0 stands for Boehm system with 17 keys and 6 rings, 1 stands for German system with 20 keys and 6 rings, 2 stands for Oehler system with 22 keys and 7 rings, and 5 stands for Albert system with 13 keys and 6 rings.

  • The fourth digit of the model number indicates the bore size of clarinet. 0 stands for standard bore size (14.65 mm), 1 stands for medium bore size (14.85 mm), and 2 stands for large bore size (15.05 mm).

  • The mark on custom models indicates the design of clarinet. CX stands for Custom EX series with a traditional bell shape and tone hole design, CS stands for Custom SE series with a tapered bell shape and undercut tone hole design, CSG stands for Custom SE Gold series with gold-plated keys and posts, CSV stands for Custom SV series with a straight tone hole design and silver-plated keys, and CSVR stands for Custom SEVR series with a reverse taper barrel design and silver-plated keys.

  • The serial number indicates the production year of clarinet. You can use this table to find out when your clarinet was made.

For example, if you have a Yamaha clarinet with model number YCL-450N and serial number 123456, you can infer that it is a standard-professional Boehm system grenadilla wood clarinet with standard bore size, made in 2021.
